SUBJECT: NACC Joins CARCAM Consortium

Northeast Alabama Community College (NACC) president Dr. David Campbell recently announced that the college has joined the Consortium for Alabama Regional Center for Automotive Manufacturing (CARCAM). CARCAM is one of 36 regional National Science Foundation Advanced Technological Education Centers across the US charged with educating today’s workforce in cutting edge technology. Curriculum is specifically designed and developed with input from business and industry and implemented in today’s highly advanced technical manufacturing industry.
Based at Gadsden State Community College and comprised of 13 community colleges in Alabama, the consortium works with automotive manufacturers to assure that the college’s curriculum meets the needs of automotive manufacturers and suppliers in the state. CARCAM responds to rapid advanced manufacturing sector growth by establishing and implementing innovative methods to develop a highly-skilled, diverse technical workforce and provide state-of-the-art professional development.
“With the expansion of the automobile manufacturing industry that is taking place in our region, particularly with Volkswagen in Chattanooga, we believe this will be a very good step forward to make certain we provide the best possible training and opportunities for our students,” Dr. Campbell stated.
As a member of CARCAM, NACC gains access to program curriculum, professional development activities for instructors, and additional student scholarship opportunities. Industrial Electronics instructor, Barry Wigley, is the faculty point of contact for CARCAM.
“We are pleased to have been invited to join CARCAM, so that we can better support the automotive suppliers in our area,” stated Dr. Mike Kennamer, Director of Workforce Development at NACC. “CARCAM’s focus is on serving this important industry sector, and we want to provide every advantage we can to our students and the companies that will hire them.”
Resources available through CARCAM will support the college’s manufacturing-related programs, including Drafting & Design Technology, Engineering Technology, Industrial Electronics, Industrial Systems Technology, Machine Tool Technology, and Welding.
